The main pathway to get PR in New Zealand is by applying for a Skilled Migrant Category residence visa. The procedure is:

  1. A 2-stage process which involves submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) and then submitting the full application.
  2. You first need to calculate your points for the main factors of age, work experience, skilled employment and qualifications. You will also need evidence of your English ability, such as IELTS 6.5 or PTE 58 (not required if you’re from a native-English speaking country).
  3. If you partner can score 6.5 IELTS or PTE 58, you can also claim bonus points for their qualifications and skilled employment.
  4. You will need to confirm if your qualifications are exempt from assessment or if they need to be assessed by NZQA. Otherwise you will not be able to claim points for them.
  5. You must be qualified for all work experience that you claim points for.
  6. You can then submit an EOI if you can score 160 points and meet English, health and character requirements.
  7. Once you submit an EOI, you will need to wait a few weeks for it to be selected and verified. If successful, you will then receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
  8. Once you have all documents ready, including police certificates, medicals, qualification assessments, evidence of work experience, and English test results, you can then submit the full application.
  9. If your application has all the correct documents, and an immigration officer is convinced that you meet all requirements, you will then be granted residence in New Zealand 🙂

The full process is not easy and any small mistake can ruin your chances. About 70% of applicants fail at the process. If you want to proceed, you should get a professional assessment from a licensed immigration adviser so that you don’t waste lots of time and money.
